The Gibbon Now Has Guts and a Stylish Look
According to arsTechnica, the Ubuntu Technical Board voted on Monday to include Compiz, that wonderfully attractive windows manager, in the next release of the Ubuntu operating system. It will be enabled by default, showing that the Ubuntu team now believes that Compiz is reliable, complete and full featured enough to be considered as a properly working program.
So what does this mean for the end user? An awesome tool will be installed by default, so that means no more hunting for downloads or compiling code that may sway some away. Hopefully the added exposure will also help speed up the design of Compiz. However, it also means that there will likely be problems for users wanting to use Ubuntu on lower end systems or for users who are just getting into Linux for the first time. As Ubuntu gains popularity, everything included in the releases should be as stable as possible - and Compiz is, for the most part, not very user friendly in some cases. Microsoft can afford to release unstable software because so many people are tied to Windows - the Ubuntu team cannot if they want to keep Ubuntu installs on the rise.
Should be interesting to see how stable everything is come October 18th.
