Four (More) Things That Need to Be Changed in Vista SP1

    Windows Vista
Or: How to Breathe New Life into Vista

I was reading this article from InformationWeek last night when I came to the conclusion that the author failed to address a few changes that Microsoft needs to make when Vista SP1 is finally released. Now, I’m not anti-Microsoft types that love to rant and rave - I just want the world’s largest software company to realize that there are some necessary changes that must take place if they want more XP users to adopt Vista.

The aforementioned article listed five things that they think Microsoft should fix in Vista SP1. These included:

    • Applications not responding
    • User Account Control Messages
    • Messy Windows Update Installs
    • Poor Performance from Internet Explorer 7
    • The high memory requirement to run Vista

While these are valid points (and I completely agree with #1 and #5), I feel a few more things should certainly be added to the list. So here four more changes that I’d like to see:

    • Bring back the “up folder” button in Windows Explorer
    • Speed up indexing
    • Increase program response times
    • Fix the built in defragger

I’d also like to see better program and driver support - although that’s not entirely Microsoft’s responsibility.

What are your opinions about Vista? What do you think should be changed, tweaked, revised, or removed in Vista’s first Service Pack?
