The Pixelmator Beta Has Finally Arrived

PixelmatorHold on to your hats Adobe fans - the Pixelmator private beta has finally arrived. Are you as excited as I am to finally give this fresh spin on an image editing program a whirl? It’s been far too long that the cheaper version of Adobe’s flagship program, Photoshop Elements, has been unchallenged. Yes, the GIMP has been the Photoshop (and Photoshop Elements) replacement of choice for cheapskates, open source fanatics, and free software junkies for some time now, but a little competition is always a good thing - right?

Pixelmator looks to combine many of the cool features that Adobe packs into Photoshop and Photoshop Elements with a bunch of Apple’s Core Image goodies. And for the asking price of $59, that seems like a steal considering the closest big name competitor, Photoshop Elements, retails anywhere between $70 and $100. It’s just a shame we can’t have a full fledged Photoshop killer for that price. Maybe the developers can eventually take Pixelmator to that level - but for now I just hope that it can at least hold its own against Photoshop Elements.

If you were one of the lucky folks who happened to purchase the latest MacUpdate Promo bundle via MacHeist, now’s the time to check your email. The guys behind Pixelmator have likely left you a little surprise in your inbox while you weren’t looking.

Even if Pixelmator is all fluff and no substance, it’s always a blast to take new software for a test run.

Expect to see an early review from me later today or tomorrow and a full review sometime in the next couple of days.
