College is a time for great change in all of us. It’s the first time that we move away from home for a long period. It’s the first time that we enter into a world that actually treats us as adults. And it’s the first time that we get to experience truly high speed internet access.
Moving from my 56k connection to the high speed line at my college was a major eye opener. Now, this was back before DSL and cable was available for a reasonable price - and the jump in speed was incredible. I could suddenly download anything that I wanted, play Counter-Strike and Team Fortress Classic with an amazingly low ping, and I was immersed in the Web like never before.
Oh, those were the good old days of file sharing. Programs like Kazaa and Napster were still the reigning champions. Audiogalaxy and Direct Connect were on the rise and nobody had ever conjured up a thought of BitTorrent and eMule - or of possible repercussions from the RIAA and MPAA. Times were good.
But now, with so many different ways to download, how is a freshman collegiate supposed to take it all in?
By turning to this guide from Wired, of course.
